Gay characters have made great progress in network television. The character played by Jodie Dallas on Soap Billy Crystal at the end of 1970 is generally regarded as an openly gay man, first as a regular player in the series. The idea has progressed so far, we have such believable characters as gay Justin Suarez on Ugly Betty and the sociopath Andrew Van De Kamp in Desperate Housewives.
Sometimes you may feel that wherever you look on television these days is a homosexual, lesbian or bisexual. Not really. According to estimates by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), these characters represent only 2.6 percent of all the recurring characters in television series in the 2008-2009 season. Although increased from 1.1 percent a year earlier and was a positive sign, more work is needed to achieve the right balance. Cable, with its two gay-oriented channel, Logo and here, which generally offers more number of GLBT characters.
Hollywood also has not kept pace and seems stuck in the twentieth century. It is true that the major studios are now many movies with these characters gays years. Most of them, however, have been in small roles like costume fickle Broadway Melody, enclosed characters, as school teacher Women at The Children's Hour, stereotype jokes, like the police in the Gaza wild or victims as AIDS patient in Philadelphia.
During the four years since the inauguration Brokeback Mountain, the major studios were just a gay film, the award-winning milk. Frames Hollywood claim of lack of quality scripts gay or that television has a lot more time in a number of developing a character whose sexuality is only part of your life, then a film that two hours. Others suggested that leaders of the film tend to be older and less comfortable with homosexuality.
Whatever the reason, Hollywood is out of touch. Attitudes have changed, especially among youth who tend to be more tolerant of alternative lifestyles. Unfortunately, until now, this acceptance did not include ordinary mysteries. Ask any mystery lover typical: When was the last time you read a crime story was a gay detective?
Gay characters have appeared in the novels for a long time, but as the films that have been expressed above roles minors as villains, victims or Freaks. It was not until Joseph Hansen, presented the series of Dave Brandstetter, we a detective - here, an insurance investigator - who was shamelessly and unapologetically gay.
The relative success of novels Hansen opened the way for other gay actors and was followed by mysteries of the breeze lesbians gay Gumshoe Daniel Nathans Aldyn Valentine amateur sleuth Jane Lawless in the books of Ellen Hart, and many others. Despite the many advances for gays and lesbians, and particularly the legalization of same-sex marriages in a growing number of states, some readers because of religious beliefs or prejudices are simply not ready to accept a gay character in a detective novel or other work of fiction. It's very bad, especially if you're a fan of mystery novels like these not only provide us more rounded and realistic images of gays and lesbians, but some are simply amazing mysteries.
