Valentine Day Economy
Posted on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
In this tough economy, many families have been forced to cut back on their Christmas spending. However, it doesn't have to mean that you can't have a nice Christmas with the family. Here are a few suggestions on how to approach Christmas with limited funds.
- Set a budget. Determine how much money you can realistically afford to spend this holiday season and stick to it. Do not use money from your savings account. Financial security is much more important to your family than some fancy Christmas presents.
- Make the holidays for the kids. Be realistic. Instead of shopping for a long list of friends and family, make it a point to buy nice presents for the kids in the family. Most adults will understand and may feel relieved that they don't have to worry about buying a gift for you.
- Cut out the holiday fluff. Avoid spending money for new decorations, cards and wrapping paper. Instead, use things you have around the house. Use the decorations saved from previous years and get the kids to help you make decorations and cards. It will add to the holiday fun.
- Be honest with children. If you have children and you are limited on the money you have to spend for the holidays, be honest with your kids. Tell them that with the tough economy, there won't be as much money to spend for Christmas this year. Most kids will understand.
- Emphasize family time. The most important part of the holidays, whether you have extra money to spend or not, should be the time that you spend with your family and loved ones.
Even without extra money or gifts, the holiday season can be a very special time if you plan ahead and make the time you spend with family and friends interesting and fun.
