Valentine Day has a history that follows ancient Christian and Roman tradition.
The first legend to the background of the celebration of Valentine’s Day is a priest by the name of Valentine, under Claudius II in Rome. Claudius believed that a single soldier was a better soldier than a married young man and so decided to outlaw marriage in order to have plenty young strong men with no wives in his army. Valentine, the priest, did not obey this law and continued to celebrate the holy bond of marriage for young couples in secrecy.
When Claudius found out about this, he had Valentine arrested and thrown in jail. On the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the first "valentine" himself, addressed to a young girl variously identified as his beloved, as the jailer's daughter whom he had befriended and healed, or both. It was a note that read "From your Valentine”. Therefore the phrase ‘Be my Valentine’
