Valentine Day Activity Book

As we approach Valentine's Day, and even the smallest start sending cards on Valentine's Day with friends, why not teach (or recall) his son the true meaning of the holiday: The History skärm Nancy J. "St. Valentine is an effective way to do that.

This booklet begins by explaining that Valentine's Day is a holiday where cards, candy and gifts are given to people we love. Illustrated by Stacy Venturi-Pickett echanging adults show gifts and decorations for children with heart in a class. Then the author explains in simple terms possible, why February 14th is a holiday.

"Long ago, in the city Rome, there lived a man named Valentine's Day. He types and all the kids loved. "

The illustrations show an older man with a Bible. (N mentioned could be a priest or a monk.) We know that the King of Rome had a law that prevents young men to marry for all to join his army and become better soldiers. Valentine, the author says, "trying to help young men and women." The accompanying illustration suggests a Wedding ceremony. The king did not like him, so he threw Valentine in prison. The children were sad, so they made maps and wrote letters to Valentine, with the hope of consolation. One day, a blind girl in Valentine brought food in prison. She thanked him and prayed with she suddenly and miraculously, the girl could not see. Valentine later sent him a letter and signed "from your Valentine." Today, the author concludes, Remember these events by sending calling cards Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day is an opportunity to show our love for our friends and family and remember that all children of God we must love one another ".

What I love: Valentine's Day is one of the Old Days, which was built on many traditions - some pagan, some Christian, some secular. It is impossible for us to know exactly which is the original San Valentin (the Catholic Church recognizes at least three saints by that name), and how much of the story is a legend and how it a fact. However, this board book does a great job of making the basic elements from February 14, I received a special name. It is also a great way to help direct the day in an opportunity to share Christian love. My two year old loves this book and asked to read it again and again.

What I dislike: I have never read the story of the blind girl in the books of history or tradition or reliable Web sites, and I've read that children have written letters Valentine while he was in prison. This does not necessarily mean that these things are not a legitimate part of the tradition, but I wonder if it is part history of Valentine's Day should be available in a book he hopes to make a halt in many mysteries of the day on a simple board book. As your child develops an understanding of reality as opposed to the fable, you can use to read this book to mark the party could be a myth. In addition, the illustrations in this book are not bad, not so exciting. Interestingly, the way the artist makes the face of every person makes all look almost the same.

Total Note: (A the lower end of) Very good.

Age Appeal: According to the editor, 3 to 5, but my two years of age, enjoy, and I think that small children are older, too.

Publishing Info: Candy Cane Press, 2002 ISBN: 06,041,845; Board book, $ 6.95.

Teachers, do you give your students gifts for...?

their birthdays, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, and the end of the year?

I have been giving them little gifts (bubbles, play dough, stickers) in a little "goody bag" for some holidays and occasionally finding (interactive - popup/activity) books for them for Christmas. I was wondering what everyone else does for these occasions. I teach pre/K.
I do keep in mind what each child's religion is, i.e. Jewish, Jehovah's Witness (no celebrations), etc.

I have always done the lil goody bags. (bags w/ stuff boys like & bags w/ girly things) For birthdays something a lil more like an educational/learning activity book & crayons/colored pencils. As well as a lil birthday party after lunch. Like they get cupcakes & we sing for b-days. Some of the parents like to come in to sing w/ us for the birthdays. It makes each child feel special :) We usually have a small party & activities centered around why we are celebrating this day as well. For example, the forth of July. For Easter we do activities centered around spring, our school approved coloring eggs as well :)
