Everyone knows that the prison island of Alcatraz in San Francisco, Alcatraz, but has a long history that goes back beyond his days in a Federal Prison. In 1853, the Army Corps of Engineers began a project to fortify the island. When the project was completed 5 years later the first soldiers to happen. During the Civil War cannons were mounted all over the island and Alcatraz became the largest American fort west of the Mississippi.

The army began sending military prisoners to the fortress on the island of Alcatraz in 1860 and for many years after Civil War War of the island has been used increasingly to the detention of prisoners. In 1907, Alcatraz was officially designated as a military prison and in 1912 a large block of cells in concrete was built, which still exists today.

While in control Military Alcatraz functioned mainly as a medium security prison. Over the years it became too expensive and the operating department War has decided to close the prison in 1934, when the Army transferred to the prison of Alcatraz Civil Office.

With the ban in 1920 and 30's and the Great Depression were responsible for a surge in criminal activities. Alcatraz is where the most hardened criminals. N ever sentenced to Alcatraz, all the prisoners sent there were transferred to other federal prisons.

Alcatraz is now a maximum security prison with minimum privileges. Prisoners at Alcatraz were only four rights. Food, clothing, shelter and medical care. All the rest was considered a privilege and had to be won.

After 29 years of operation as a federal prison Alcatraz finally closed March 21, 1963. It is simply too expensive to operate the plant, near three times more than other federal prisons. Being an island, everything had to be shipped food, clothing, supplies, including freshwater. The federal government has determined that it was more profitable to build a new facility to remain open Alcatraz.

In 1972, Congress created the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and Alcatraz Island was included as a party. In October 1973 opened Alcatraz the public for the first time that interest has continued to grow over the years. Each year more than 1.3 million people visit the island.

Finally Alcatraz closes

Robert Stroud

Better known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz" Stroud was transferred to Alcatraz 1942 Leavenworth, where he had spent the last 30 years. Stroud spent six years in solitary D Block, and eleven years in the prison hospital. In 1959, He was transferred to the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners Springfield, Missouri, where he eventually died a natural death in 1963.

George "Machine Gun Kelly

George R. Kelly was transferred to Alcatraz in 1934 in Leavenworth, Kansas. In only 19 years, Kelly had separated from his wife, then got involved in smuggling liquor. Soon he was making a name for himself as a gangster. When he met his second wife, Katheryn Thorne, who was also a seasoned criminal, they have really started to pursue their careers and not only criminals and traffickers, but as bank robbers and kidnappers. The nickname "Machine Gun" Kelly actually came from his wife Katheryn. She bought a gun from her husband and made a name for it, through the shells used cartridge underground clubs in memory of her husband's "Machine Gun" Kelly. Many historians believe was the mastermind behind the image of their husbands and numerous bank robberies without success.

Al Capone:

Capone career in crime started young and rapidly made his way to the top. The control of a vast criminal empire that has reported 10 million dollars a year in the 1920s. Capone was sentenced in 1931 to escape charges and sent to Atlanta Federal Penitentiary before being transferred to Alcatraz. Capone finished his time in Alcatraz on January 6, 1939 and was transferred to Terminal Island, California to serve a sentence of one year offense. From there, he was released November 16, 1939, and after a short hospitalization stay back home in Florida.
